Scolarships

The May meeting of the Shelby County Builders Association recognized five scholarship winners selected from area high schools. The students will receive $500 toward their college expenses.

The scholarships were open to any senior currently enrolled in a Shelby County high school who plans to attend college to earn a two-year or four-year degree. The students were asked to write a paragraph on their qualifications, explain how the scholarship would be used and attach a list of school, community and/or church activities.

The winners:

Casey Gumberts from Morristown High School, who plans to attend Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, to earn a degree in forensic science.

Maria Hagerman from Triton Central High School, who intends to attend the pharmacy school at Purdue University.

Sean Mattingly from Waldron High School, who plans to attend Indiana University to become a physical therapist.

Brittany Smith from Shelbyville High School, whose goal is to attend Indiana University and major in telecommunications.

Clancy Soehren from Southwestern High School, who plans to earn an engineering degree at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology.

Habitat for Humanity
The Shelby County Builders Association assisted the Shelby County chapter of Habitat for Humanity in their project for 2007 to provide a new home for a family in Shelbyville. Habitat for Humanity builds or rehabilitates homes with low income families. Families provide sweat equity by helping with construction and publicity, and purchase homes with no-interest, low monthly mortgage payments. The local organization currently builds one home per year.
